Workout Tips for Women

And yet most women wouldn’t dare approach the gym like a guy. How do I know? Because the 10 women at my wife’s book club told me so last night, and it’s the same thing I’ve heard for the last 10 years in the fitness industry. The reality is that training “like a man” will actually make you leaner, sexier, and have your friends dying to know your secret.

So forget gender differences for a moment. Here are three tips that are part of the foundation of The Venux Tips. They work well for men, but like most things in life, by following these simple rules, the end result will look even better on a woman.

Rule 1: Stick to the Basics
Everyone loves to create exercises that make working out more fun. And that’s fine; your workout should be enjoyable. But thinking that Bosu ball balancing acts or one-legged plié jumps while holding a kettlebell will get you fitter faster just isn’t accurate. If you want results, you have to stick with what we know works. And that’s classic, multi-muscle exercises like squats and deadlifts. These exercises work because they force you to use multiple muscle groups at once. And the more muscles you activate, the more fat you’ll slash.

These may seem like exercises for guys, but not all squats are done with a barbell loaded with lots of weight. (Although women shouldn’t fear heavier weights; they don’t make you bulky.) Variations of these exercises are timeless and extremely effective. Grab a pair of dumbbells and try Bulgarian split squats (Click here to see a how-to video.). Your legs and butt will thank you.

Rule 2: Less Cardio
More women perform cardio as a means to lose weight than men. This is not a stereotype—it’s reality. That’s not to say men aren’t equally guilty. (We spent part of an entire chapter in Engineering the Alpha busting the cardio-fat loss myth.) It’s true cardio helps you burn calories… but so does eating. So that’s not the issue; you want to find the most efficient ways to burn calories and more importantly fat. And you want to build a body that makes it easier for you to enjoy the foods you love, right?

That’s why cardio isn’t the answer. Or, at least, it’s not the primary solution. Cardio will burn calories, and weight training is more likely to burn fat. If you’re going to do cardio, make it secondary to weight training. That means either doing cardio on separate days (if you have the time) or after a weight training workout. The best thing about lifting weights is that your body adapts to the new muscle mass you’ll build, which means your metabolism will be higher, you’ll burn more calories, and you’ll change your hormones (like insulin) to be able to handle the foods you love.

Rule 3: More Intensity
I’ve spent enough time in the gym to know that making fitness social is a great idea. Few things are better than going to gym with friends or being part of group fitness, whether it’s bootcamp, Crossfit, or Zumba. What’s not okay is focusing on the social aspect more than the workout itself. Most guys go in with a “go big or go home” mentality. While this can lead to injuries, it’s closer to the right mindset in terms of getting results.

When you go to the gym, you want to get in and get out. Longer workouts are not better workouts. Intense workouts are what works. Your heart rate should be elevated and you should be sweating and feeling your muscles work. Completely transforming your body does not take a lot of time—but it does take a lot of effort. If you want an idea of what all out effort feels like, try this simple two-exercise sequence. It’s called a countdown. It might only take 10 minutes, but it might feel like the hardest workout you’ve ever performed. Use this as a baseline for how hard you should be pushing to get the body you want.

Countdown Workout
Perform 10 reps of a kettlebell (or dumbbell) swing
Without rest, do 10 reps of burpees
Still without resting, do 9 reps of the swings
Now do 9 reps of burpees

Continue this pattern until you do just 1 rep of each exercise, trying to rest as little as possible (or not at all) between moves.

New York Man ‘Grows’ Six Inches

At five foot, six inches, Apotheosis was shorter than the average American male and very unhappy about it.

So he did something other men who feel short might consider unthinkable: he opted for costly, painful surgeries to make himself “grow” a total of six inches.

“I realized that the world looked at me a certain way that I didn’t look at myself in that certain way,” said the 37-year-old New Yorker, who goes by the pseudonym “Apotheosis” in online forums and asked that “20/20” not use his real name. “I wanted the way I felt about myself and the way the world felt about me to be similar.”

Apotheosis is one of a “growing” number of men pursuing limb-lengthening procedures for cosmetic reasons.

Dr. Dror Paley, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon at the Paley Institute at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., performed 650 leg-lengthening surgeries last year.

Most of Paley’s patients have severe deformities or dwarfism, but he also sees cosmetic patients.

“The majority who come for cosmetic limb lengthening have what we call, height dysphoria. They’re unhappy with their height,” said Paley, adding that therapy has little effect on changing a patient’s views. “It’s one of the few psychologic-psychiatric disorders that you can actually cure with the knife.”

That is precisely the reason why Akash Shukla, 25, decided to undergo the procedure. At age 18, the New Jersey man was devastated to find out that his final height would be 4’11 ½.

“I felt like my short stature was kind of causing a void inside me- an emptiness in my heart, if you will,” he said.

And not everyone was encouraging.

“There are people that have said, ‘just accept what God gave you. But, in some way, shape or form everybody is trying to alter what god gave them. If God gave kids crooked teeth, they get braces,” said Shukla, who is now almost 5’2″ thanks to the surgery.

But limb lengthening is certainly not like straightening teeth.

Only a few doctors, including Paley, perform the procedure in the United States.

Surgeons break the leg bone in two and implant a state-of-the-art telescopic rod into the middle of the broken bones which then pulls the bone apart very slowly, about one millimeter a day.

New bone grows around it and tissues like the muscle, the nerves, the arteries, and the skin, regenerate as well.

At about $85,000, the procedure is expensive and the process lengthy. It takes at least three months to complete it and it requires demanding and excruciating physical therapy.

Apotheosis is still in recovery and he does not want to go public even though this is his second surgery. “I am still lengthening right now and there could be further complications and I don’t want to talk about it successfully until it’s been successful.”

But he is candid about his leg lengthening journey on www.growtallerpyramidsecret.com, an online side for people interested in the procedure.

“I am not telling anyone they should do this surgery, but I am laying out my experiences and the risks that I have taken and the successes that I have had and let people make their own decision,” he said.

Many go to the site looking for advice on doctors, often foreign, as the cost for the surgery could be less than half as much overseas.

Apotheosis traveled to Germany to have internal rods implanted and now he is the one responsible for controlling the lengthening, twisting his legs back and forth to extend the rod inside.

Despite the pain and financial burden, patients like Apotheosis say those few more inches of height can make a big difference.

“When I walk down the street a different person perceived differently by the world for the rest of my life, you know, I am who I want to be now,” he said.

He chose the moniker Apotheosis, he said, because “it means to become godlike — become the best you can be. It’s a Greek word.”

“And that’s kind of what I want? And I am not trying to be godlike; I am trying to be the best me that I can be.”

Bodyweight Exercise without Equipment

So I woke up last Sunday morning in a great mood and just felt like working out and trust me this doesn’t happen too often.

I love fitness and be healthy but I usually save Sunday’s for relaxing and recharging my batteries but for some reason my blood was pumping.

And I really wanted to take action on those intense feelings so I decided to write that I could do without having to go to the gym and bust out any dumbbells. The workout didn’t even last a half hour and I was in and out before you know it, which was awesome because who wants to spend their whole day working out? But just because it was a fast workout at home doesn’t mean that I wasn’t feeling it.

My heart was pumping and I had to go outside to get some fresh air so I can cool down. So the moral of the story is that if you have a hankering for working out and you’re in the mood then TAKE ACTION on it and workout. Because I’m not always in the mood to workout and have to force myself sometimes (which is the key for long term success) but I just love exercising when I’m in the mood and pumped up.
